This photo, taken by Skye Schmidt, is from an MFA thesis I performed in last year, entitled "Agave Americana." The lighting, designed by Morgan Embry, was a huge element in creating the world in which we were dancing. This particular moment was memorable in the way that Morgan used shutters to highlight the agave plants that were downstage and upstage. The side lighting that lights half of my face is striking because it creates a feeling of dichotomy between light and dark. Surprisingly, it actually occurred during a part of the piece in which I underwent a metaphorical transformation from life to death. This lighting design demonstrates how light can indicate conceptual ideas that advance the performance.
