| While I was driving on the freeway to run an errand, I noticed the light seeping through the clouds in this ethereal manner. I think what intrigued me about how the light appeared was the emotional component attached, and this notion of a bright light being hidden by a dark cloud representing hope. The angle, color, and intensity of the light in this picture is what drew this emotional connection for me. As I exited the freeway, and saw the light from a different angle, it didn't give the same response as this specific angle had. Since I was now looking at it from the side, the light didn't seem hidden from the cloud, and there wasn't a ray that come through the cloud down into the surface anymore; it was rather just a light next to a cloud. When the angle was switched to the side, it lost the mysterious and suggestive components that the front angle had. In addition, color was an imperative aspect in promoting a certain response for me. The light being a mixture of yellow and white, along with the cloud being a darker grey, heightened the experience of the light being hopeful and ethereal; as yellow is often associated with hope and optimism, especially yellow light. Lastly, the intensity of the light shining just enough to overpower the clouds, but not too much that you could still view the clouds and the light coming through, increased the emotional components that I have been talking about. These three tools of the lighting "design" promoted specific responses and emotional attachments that I already have with color and light intensity, and had these tools be shifted in any way (like the angle), my response would shift as well. |
