The first word that comes to mind when viewing this photo is “ominous,” a feeling that something unpleasant is unraveling before us. In understanding the topics that were developed in this piece, I came to see the lighting and special effects to be a genius way for developing tension on the stage. The darkness on stage seems to make everything more visible, sharp and clear. This dance thesis concert discussed topics of race and equality, of feeling foreign in your own country. As the spotlight projects down on the dancers, it reflects off of the floor, causing a flashlight effect on their faces. The “ominous” quality I came to realize was the own turmoil we feel within ourselves, the feeling of wanting to belong and how we come to face topics that haunt our well-being. The lighting seemed to focus on the dancing as if it were a suspect being questioned in a case. The darker spaces of the stage eluting to the mysterious developments of our thoughts and how we feel an internal struggle for acceptance.
