Welcome to 50c
Hello Everyone!
My name is Merle DeWitt III and I am one of your TA's for this quarter. I am in my second year here at UCI as a graduate student in lighting. Although I have been working in and around theater since I was in the fifth grade I never really know how much I did not know about lighting until I got to grad school.
Lighting for me used to be about turning on some lights and making a scene look "pretty." I knew how to do this, for the most part, leaving my undergrad but I never really had a true understanding as to why. That is something, I feel UCI does wonders with, as you will see through this course we will not only be discussing how to turn on, focus, and color light, but to allow you to discover why you want to make these decisions and how to break the "rules" in lighting.
Beyond the why of what lights are using I have also enjoyed the ability to explore new technologies that can be integrated into lighting. My second passion in the design field is projection. While here at UCI I have been able to not only design projections for shows, but in the case of Reading Frankenstein I was able to assist the lighting designer in lighting the show with projections.
If you want to see a little more about me and the design work I have done you can check out my website www.merledewitt.com.
Let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to working with you all the rest of the quarter!
