This picture, taken by Skye Schmidt, was captured from the final moments of my Physical Graffiti piece last year "the darkest nights produce the brightest stars". The lighting designer, Nita Mendoza, utilized color, intensity, and angle to create a captivating final image for the audience. Nita knew that the departure point for my piece was finding hope through the darkest times, thus she utilized a lot of amber shades towards the end to represent that optimism. Particularly with this moment, she truly embodied the title of the piece, utilizing small number of lights with that beautiful amber color, surrounded by a mass amount of darkness to create a contrast that heightens the amber even more. In addition, the angle she chose for this light is truly what creates that striking image. By selecting a light from above, with a lower intensity, it gave a more ethereal connotation with the dancers.
