This is a photo I took at Tanaka Farms in October. While the natural lighting coming from the sun is very simple, the lighting in conjunction with the composition of the photo creates a powerful effect. The backlighting of the sun in the mid-afternoon hits the sunflower in such a way that it gives a striking glow on the edges of the flower's petals and leaves. This subtle glow adds depth to a photo that really only involves three hues, plus shadowing and highlighting. Additionally, the angle at which I took the photo is a low angle, which typically creates a sense of power and grandeur in the subject being photographed. This power, coupled with the depth created by the sun's light beams, almost gives me a sense that the sunflower is a character with a story to tell. This photo is a reminder that lighting can greatly enhance and advance a narrative that is trying to be told.
