Blog #4

Now that we are in our final stages of the class and I am beginning to have a stronger understanding of all the different aspects that go into stage lighting. I wanted to take this blog as an opportunity to analyze an actual show. This picture is from Dear Evan Hansen. The lighting director is Japhy Weideman. I love this picture because of the different spotlights occurring on stage. They are very white light, such I would assume to be no gel crossing over each other at different patterns. These diagonal lights are illuminating the backs of the characters’ legs, which very interesting that this is where they intend direction is and they are tiny spots. Then there is a very strong spotlight on Evan fully bringing him to light. The set itself is minimal on the number of lights they could use but all the characters are well illuminated to achieve the frozen, stopped in time, type of feeling. I would say the intensity is very high and I would not be surprised if they moved. This photo and set design is beautiful. If I had to add two adjectives to it, I would say: petrified and protective.
